โ WHY HEIRLIGHT
What makes Heirlight a different kind of archival studio
We are a small, purpose-built studio in George Town. We do one kind of work, and we do it carefully. Here is why families choose us.

Six reasons families come to us
Archival materials, always
Acid-free, pH-neutral, long-term stable. We do not use ordinary stationery or household materials for preservation work.
Qualified, experienced team
Our archivists have backgrounds in document preservation and library science. Our educators hold adult-education qualifications and ongoing CPD commitments.
No pressure, no deadlines
Appointment-based, unhurried, and paced to suit the family. We have never turned a commission around faster than the work properly requires.
Plain-language output
Every catalogue and inventory sheet is written in clear English that a family member with no archival background can read and use confidently.
Digital output included
High-resolution scans are returned on a formatted hard drive. The digital archive belongs to you and can be shared with relatives anywhere in the world.
Private and discreet
What your family holds is private. We handle all material with discretion and do not retain client records after a project is completed.

Scanning & Documentation
We scan at 600 dpi as our standard, with the option of 1200 dpi for particularly fragile or detailed items. Files are named using a consistent, date-ordered system that makes them easy to find and sort. The hard drive we return to you is formatted for both Mac and Windows use.
- Minimum 600 dpi scanning for all documents and photographs
- Consistent, logical file naming system throughout
- Cross-platform formatted hard drive returned with every archive

What You Leave With
At the end of a Heirlight commission, a family has a physical archive properly housed in archival materials, a printed catalogue they can read and use, a digital copy of everything they brought, and a clear understanding of what they hold. That is the work, completed.
- All items returned physically stabilised and correctly housed
- Printed catalogue in a bound, readable format
- Complete digital copy on a returned hard drive

โ What Sets Us Apart
What you will not find elsewhere
A studio built for this work in George Town
Our studio is set up specifically for archival and documentation work โ proper lighting, clean surfaces, temperature-controlled storage during sessions, and a dedicated scanning setup. We are not a general office doing archival work on the side.
Heritage Conversation Sessions โ uncommon in Malaysia
Very few studios in Malaysia offer adult-education sessions specifically for families working through the practical and emotional process of sorting a relative's belongings. We built this programme because the need was clear and the gap was real.
Local knowledge, multilingual context
Penang's family archives often span languages โ English, Mandarin, Hokkien, Malay, and Tamil appearing in the same box. Our team understands this complexity and can note linguistic context in the catalogue without the need for translation (which remains outside our scope).
You keep everything, every time
We do not retain originals, digital copies, or catalogue data after a project is completed. There is no cloud storage, no long-term file management agreement, and no data we continue to hold. The archive is yours, entirely.
