The interior of a small archival studio with shelves of labelled folders

โ€” OUR COMPANY

A small studio with a clear purpose โ€” preserve what families keep

Founded in George Town, Penang, Heirlight exists to help families document and preserve the records of an older generation before they are lost to time or circumstance.

โ€” Our Story

How Heirlight began

Heirlight was founded in 2019 by a small group of archivists and adult educators who had spent years watching families lose the written records of their grandparents and great-grandparents โ€” not through carelessness, but through not quite knowing what to do with them.

A box of letters sits at the back of a wardrobe for a decade. An envelope of photographs is moved from house to house without being opened. A folder of papers is kept out of respect but never read. These situations are common, and they are not failures. Families are busy, and the work of sorting through an older generation's belongings is emotionally weighty alongside being practically uncertain.

We set up a small studio in the heritage quarter of George Town โ€” a part of Penang that understands, perhaps more than most places, what it means to hold on to the past while living in the present โ€” and began offering appointments to families who wanted help.

Our work is deliberately narrow. We archive, we catalogue, we document. We run small-group educational sessions for people who want a guided space to work through what they are holding. We produce typed inventories for families who want order before they proceed with other decisions.

We do not interpret the legal or financial weight of documents. We do not address matters that belong to people with regulated qualifications. What we do โ€” carefully cleaning a photograph, sleeving it in archival material, photographing it at full resolution, and entering it into a typed catalogue โ€” is unglamorous work. But it is the kind of work that, once done, means that a family in twenty years can open a box and know exactly what they hold.

That is our mission: to make the records of the past legible, accessible, and lasting for the people they belong to.

โ€” Standards

How we approach the work

Archival-Grade Materials

All sleeves, boxes, and tissue used in our studio meet archival standards for pH neutrality and long-term stability. We do not use materials that could degrade the items in our care.

standard โ€” material quality

Privacy and Discretion

The contents of family documents are private. We do not share, discuss, or reference what we read in the course of cataloguing. All client records are stored securely and are not retained after project completion.

standard โ€” privacy

Consistent Scanning Protocols

Photographs and documents are scanned at 600 dpi minimum. File naming follows a consistent, date-ordered system. All digital output is returned on a hard drive formatted for cross-platform compatibility.

standard โ€” digital output

Careful Physical Handling

Cotton gloves are worn for all document and photograph handling. Items are never stacked loose or left unprotected on a work surface. Fragile items are examined with additional care and noted in the catalogue.

Scope Clarity Before We Begin

Before accepting any commission, we have a first conversation to understand what a family holds and what they want from the work. We do not begin unless the scope is clear and the family is comfortable with the process.

Adult-Education Framework

Our Heritage Conversation Sessions are designed using publicly available adult-education principles. Session content is reviewed annually. Facilitators hold relevant educational qualifications and ongoing professional development commitments.

โ€” Our Approach

Heritage documentation in Malaysia โ€” what it means in practice

Across Malaysia, families hold remarkable quantities of personal and family material โ€” letters written in the 1940s and 1950s, photographs from the early decades of the last century, government documents, receipts, contracts, and diaries spanning three or four generations. This material is fragile. It is also often the only record of people who did not appear in formal histories.

Heritage documentation work involves building an organised, described, and physically stabilised record of what a family holds. It is different from appraising, valuing, or making decisions about use or distribution โ€” those are activities for people with other kinds of qualifications. Documentation and archiving sit at the beginning of that process: once a family knows what they have and can read it clearly, they are better placed to make the decisions that follow.

At Heirlight, we work primarily with Chinese Malaysian, Malay, and Tamil families in Penang and around the peninsula who are moving through the practical work of settling an older generation's belongings. We also work with families from further afield who have a connection to Penang and want their materials preserved in a place that understands the local context.

Our studio is small by design. We take on a limited number of commissions at a time so that the work is not rushed and so that each family receives full attention. If our waiting list is long, we will tell you honestly, and we will suggest a practical timeline.
